Privacy
Petrol · LiveLocal is built to be useful without being nosy. Here's exactly what happens with your data — no lawyer-speak.
Last updated: 24 April 2026 · Controller: LiveLocal · Contact: hello@livelocal.org.uk
This policy covers Petrol · LiveLocal only (petrol.livelocal.org.uk and its Android app). Other apps in the LiveLocal family have their own privacy policies; check the specific site you're using.
The short version
We don't sell your data. We don't show adverts. We don't profile you. We don't track you across other websites. We don't ask you to sign up. The only things leaving your phone are: (1) your postcode or GPS coordinates so we can find fuel nearby, and (2) if you accept cookies, anonymous usage stats so we know which features matter.
What we collect and why
Location (postcode or GPS)
When you enter a postcode or tap the location button, we convert it to latitude and longitude via postcodes.io (a free UK open-data service) and use it to query nearby forecourts and roadworks. The coordinates are kept on your device in local storage and a cookie scoped to .livelocal.org.uk so the sibling LiveLocal apps can reuse the same location. We do not store your location on our servers.
Analytics (Google Analytics 4)
If you click Accept on the cookie banner, we enable Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymization. This tells us anonymous, aggregated things like "500 people used the diesel tab this week" — not who you are. If you click Decline (or don't interact), Google Consent Mode keeps every storage bucket disabled and we only get modelled, cookieless pings. Your choice is stored in a cookie named ll_consent and applies across all LiveLocal sites. You can change it any time by clearing cookies for livelocal.org.uk.
Push notifications (optional)
If you opt in to daily price alerts, your browser generates an anonymous push subscription token. We store this token on our server so we can send you one push per day with the cheapest local price. The token is not linked to any identity. Revoke it any time in the app or your browser's notification settings.
Community price flagging
When you tap Flag Price on a stale listing, we record an anonymous flag count against that station on our server — no user identifier attached.
Donations (if you choose to)
If you tap any of our donation links (for example, a "Buy us a coffee" button), you leave our site and land on a third-party payment page — typically Ko-fi. We never see your card details or any identifying information about your donation. The donation processor's own privacy policy covers what they do with your payment data; we only receive the money and, if you choose to add a note, the note. We don't record who donates. We show occasional reminders only to users who have opened the app several times, dismissible with "Maybe later" and quiet for 30 days after.
What we don't do
- No accounts, no passwords, no email collection.
- No third-party advertising networks.
- No cross-site tracking pixels.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of personal data.
- No profiling for commercial purposes.
Third parties we talk to
- postcodes.io — UK postcode to lat/lng lookup. We proxy requests through our server so your IP isn't directly shared with them.
- UK CMA retailer feeds — fuel price data, published publicly by forecourt operators.
- National Highways — roadworks feed, publicly published.
- Google Analytics 4 — only if you accept the cookie banner. Google is the data processor; we're the controller. Data is sent to Google servers which may be outside the UK; Google maintains appropriate Standard Contractual Clauses.
- Krystal Hosting (UK) — our web host; data processor.
Cookies and local storage
Before consent, we set only the strictly-necessary items needed for the app to function (your location choice, your preferred fuel tab, your consent selection). After consent, Google Analytics sets its own _ga cookies. Full list on request.
Android app
The Petrol · LiveLocal Android app is a Trusted Web Activity — it's the same website running in a streamlined Chrome shell. All privacy behaviour above applies identically. The app requests no additional permissions beyond optional location and optional notifications.
Your rights (UK GDPR)
You have the right to access, correct, delete, or request a copy of any personal data we hold. Given we hold almost none, in practice this usually means "clear your cookies" — but if you've opted in to push notifications and want the subscription token deleted server-side, email hello@livelocal.org.uk and we'll purge it. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes
If we change anything material, we'll update the date at the top and — if it affects existing users — surface the change in the app on next load.
